The Robert E. Lee Day History

Robert Edward Lee was descended from a Virginia blue-blood family, many of whom were legendary figures in the armed forces. In 1829, Lee graduated second in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

After this, he had no more direct involvement in the military for an extended period of time. That is, up to the American-Mexican War of 1845. He collaborated and met with a number of future army high-ranking leaders, including as George Pickett, Winfield Scott, and Ulysses S. Grant. In 1847, Lee was working for Scott as a staff member when Mexico City was taken. With his actions during this battle, Lee made a lasting impression on both his superiors and colleagues, earning him promotion after promotion, first as a major and then as a lieutenant colonel and colonel.

Following that, the United States entered a catastrophic civil war that split the country in half, creating the Union Army and the Confederate Army. Abraham Lincoln himself had recommended Lee to lead the “Union Army” in April 1861 due to his stellar record in the U.S. Military. Nevertheless, Lee turned down this position rather than giving up his leadership and returning to Virginia, where the American Civil War was just getting started. In 1862, he joined the newly established “Confederate States Army” as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, further demonstrating his devotion for his home state by serving as an advisor to Confederate leader Jefferson Davis. Up until his capitulation three years later, he held this position.
