ROK Alliance Day is observed annually on October 1. It commemorates the adoption of the U.S.-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty in 1953, which inaugurated the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea. In September 2021, the Korea Defense Veterans Association (K.D.V.A.) proclaimed this day as a national holiday to honor the millions of American and Korean veterans who fought in the Korean War and served in Korea since the Armistice Agreement was signed in July 1953. It aims to provide Americans and Koreans with a tranquil and secure lifestyle.

The background of ROK Alliance Day

The United States military has played a significant role in shaping public opinion in Korea and in the formation of the South Korean state. This relationship dates back to 1945, when the United States military administration directly administered South Korea until 1948 under the command of General John Hodges. Since the beginning of the Korean War in 1950, the alliance has been established in the blood. During that conflict, 36,516 Americans perished while pushing North Korean troops out of the South and up to the Yalu River border with China.

The U.S. military assisted in the establishment of the Republic of Korea and has maintained a tangible presence there for virtually the entirety of the nation’s history. During the brief period after U.S. forces left Korea in 1949, North Korea invaded the Republic of Korea and began the Korean War, highlighting the significance of the connection. In Pacific Asia, North Korea continues to threaten American and South Korean interests. Between 1953 and 2003, North Korea was involved in 1,439 significant provocations.

There are currently approximately 28,500 U.S. soldiers stationed in South Korea.
