Royal Hobart Regatta 2024: Every year, throughout the weekend of the second Monday in February, three days are devoted to the Royal Hobart Regatta. This year, it happens from February 10 to February 12. It is among Tasmania’s most venerable and esteemed occasions.
Since the island’s creation, which was commemorated with its inaugural regatta in 1838, the island has drawn tens of thousands of tourists during the second weekend in February. The regatta’s exhilarating in- and out-of-water competitions, as well as its breathtaking aerial and aquatic displays, captivate spectators. Tourists take in the vibrancy of Queens Domain’s activities beside the River Derwent for three days straight.
The Royal Hobart Regatta History
The lengthy history of the regatta started in 1838 to honor Tasmania’s discovery. Approximately 40,000 people attended the three-day festivities today. The dancing boat sails of all sizes, as they glide over the waterways, delight visitors the most.
Tasmania held the first Hobart Town Anniversary on December 1, 1838, to commemorate the anniversary of European settlers’ discovery of the island in the seventeenth century.
On November 24, 1642, Dutch adventurer Abel Tasman made the first known sighting of the island. Ever since wearing a sprig of silver wattle blossom wrapped with a British Navy blue ribbon has been a tradition for commemorating the yearly anniversary regatta. It is currently the oldest continuously observed public holiday in Australia, falling on the Monday that follows the regatta weekend.
Originally held at Pavilion Point, the regatta has moved to the grounds around Macquarie Point, also referred to as the “Regatta Ground,” since 1856. The Queens Domain, situated beside the River Derwent, is where the ground is. The Hobart Cenotaph, a military memorial honoring the Tasmanian soldiers who gave their lives in battle, is located on this site today. Both competitors and spectators make frequent visits to the regatta.
In honor of the occasion, the Royal Australian Air Force conducts military aircraft fly-pasts, and the Royal Australian Navy sends a warship to act as its flagship. Additionally entertaining are the RAAF Roulettes, who perform aerobatics, and the Australian Army’s elite Red Beret parachute battalion, which puts on amazing skydiving shows. The regatta includes a tug of war, a transderwent swim, open water swimming, wood cutting, jet ski racing, and dragon boat racing.
