Rumi Day occurs annually on September 30. Since the dawn of time, poetry has played an important role in the lives of individuals from all walks of life. Given that poetry and writing are frequently highly esteemed disciplines, it is unsurprising that numerous civilizations and communities celebrate their most esteemed poets and authors. Their birthdays have become national and even international occasions due to their notoriety. One of these celebrations is Rumi Day, which honors the life and works of the poet Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, also known as Rumi.

The background of Rumi Day

Rumi was born on September 30, 1207, to Persian-speaking parents on the eastern coasts of the then-Persian Empire in the city of Balkh, which is now a part of Afghanistan. He eventually settled in the city of Konya, which is now a part of Turkey. The existence of Rums is filled with intrigue, drama, and intense creative activity. He was a nobleman, theologian, attorney, and brilliant but serious scholar. On November 30, 1244, he encountered Shams, a holy wanderer, in the alleyways of Konya.

The two mystics lived in close proximity for several months, until February 1246, when Rumi’s disregard for his students and family forced Shams to depart the area. Rumi was devastated, and his eldest son, Sultan Walad, returned Shams from Syria in the end. The family was unable to sustain Rumi’s relationship with Shams, and Shams disappeared one night in 1247. Shams was murdered in the twentieth century, and Rumi’s sons were aware of this. They buried him swiftly near a spring that still exists in Konya.

When Shams died, Rumi fell into a deep depression, and from that anguish flowed approximately 70,000 lines of poetry, almost exclusively in Persian, which are collected in two epic volumes. Two epic volumes contain thousands of compositions, over 2,000 of which are in quatrain form. His first collection, “Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi,” is dedicated to Shams, his mentor. This collection required fifteen years to complete. Rumi passed away in 1273, but his influence has been enormous ever since.
