Russia National Flag Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Russia

When Peter I ascended to the throne, the Russian flag became a symbol of his ambitions to modernise Russia. One of his goals was to construct a formidable Russian navy.

Russia National Flag Day occurs annually on August 22. The celebrations get greater each year! And they ought to. After a failed coup by hardliners and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, today commemorates the anniversary of an independent, modern Russia. What does the national flag have to do with this pivotal historical event? Everything comes out to be the case! It goes without saying that national flags represent the essence of a nation. But you know the tale will be even more enthralling when it involves Russia and the origin of the national flag. These innocuous white, blue, and scarlet stripes represent the country’s historical development. Every year, Russia celebrates the holiday with lectures, concerts, exhibitions, and state-sponsored events.

The background of Russia National Flag Day

When Peter I ascended to the throne, the Russian flag became a symbol of his ambitions to modernise Russia. One of his goals was to construct a formidable Russian navy. Therefore, the monarch travelled to the Netherlands to study cutting-edge shipbuilding. He chose a flag for Russian merchant ships that resembled the Dutch tricolour — red, white, and blue — in the 17th century. The stripes on the Russian flag were white, blue, and scarlet.

During the Soviet era, the Russian flag appeared drastically different. The new colour symbolised ideologies based on the Red Banner or the insurrection of the people. The official state flag featured a crimson star, a sickle, and a gold hammer.

As cracks began to appear in the Soviet Union’s armour, discontent increased. Although the government exercised stringent control, it lacked a unified vision for the populace. Mikhail Gorbachev ascended to power in 1985. To save the Soviet Union’s economy, he instituted a comprehensive economic reform programme. Gorbachev’s initiatives were not well received by communist party leaders, who once held absolute power and influence.

In 1991, the group forcibly overthrew Gorbachev and held him hostage. They went so far as to declare Gorbachev “indisposed” and unfit to administer. It was a fatal error in judgement. Protests erupted in the Soviet Union in response to the announcement, uniting the nation as never before. Even the armed soldiers dispatched to quell the uprising refused to murder fellow citizens. The unsuccessful coup led to the inevitable dissolution of the Soviet Union. In the same year that Gorbachev returned to Moscow, he resigned, leaving Boris Yeltsin as the new president of Russia. By instituting Flag Day, Yeltsin restored the Russian tricolour to its former grandeur.
