Protests erupted in the Soviet Union in response to the announcement, uniting the nation as never before. Even the armed soldiers dispatched to quell the uprising refused to murder fellow citizens. The unsuccessful coup led to the inevitable dissolution of the Soviet Union. In the same year that Gorbachev returned to Moscow, he resigned, leaving Boris Yeltsin as the new president of Russia. By instituting Flag Day, Yeltsin restored the Russian tricolour to its former grandeur.
