Saint Martin’s Day

Saint Martin’s Day 2023: The 11th of November is observed as Saint Martin’s Day, the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours, a French town bishop who was baptized during his time in Rome. Amidst a snowfall, he is renowned for slicing his cloak in half in order to donate it to a beggar. During the same evening, he had a dream in which Jesus, clad in a half-cloak, addressed angels, “Behold Martin, the Roman soldier who has just been baptized; it was he who clothed me.” Three days after his death on November 8, 397, Saint Martin was interred. Saint Martin’s Feast Day is alternatively referred to as Martinmas, Old Halloween, or Old Hallowmas Eve.

Saint Martin’s Day 2023: History

Saint Martin’s Day originated in France and subsequently spread throughout the Low Countries, including Eastern Europe, the British Isles, Galicia, Germany, and Scandinavia. It is the day Martin is celebrated at Mass and signifies the start of autumn in the economic calendar and the end of natural winter on the agricultural calendar. It is also known as Martinmas. The availability of an abundance of brewed beer and wine signifies the conclusion of winter preparations, which included the slaughtering of animals. As they did on September 29, during Michaelmas, devotees partake in goose to commemorate the event. Comparable to the American Thanksgiving, the feast honors the earth for sustaining life.

Martinmas celebrations commence at 11:11 a.m. on November 11, which is the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in some countries. Others begin the festivities on November 10, St. Martin’s Eve. In the sixth century, church councils mandated fasting between Saint Martin’s Day and the Epiphany on January 6 for a period of 56 days, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. Saint Martin’s Lent, or “Quadragesima Sancti Martini,” was a fasting period comparable to the forty days observed as fasting during Lent. Observance was infrequent prior to its transformation into the present-day Advent practice.

Currently, Saint Martin’s Day is frequently observed with barbecues, celebrations, and bonfires. Children traverse the streets at night while carrying lanterns and performing tunes that earn them candy rewards.
