Dr. Ride was an astronaut who was born on May 26, 1951 in Los Angeles, California. She attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania before transferring to U.C.L.A. In 1973, Ride graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Physics from Stanford University. In 1975, she earned a master’s degree in Physics from Stanford. She earned a Ph.D. in Physics in 1978. Her research investigated the interaction between X-rays and the interstellar medium. Out of the 8,000 individuals who applied to the NASA astronaut training programme, only 35 were chosen. She was a member of NASA Astronaut Group 8, the first cohort of American astronauts to include women. Dr. Ride achieved space on the second flight of the Space Shuttle “Challenger” as the mission specialist aboard STS-7. The STS-7 was launched on June 18, 1983 from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Dr. Ride was the youngest astronaut to ever ascend to space at 32 years old.

She worked at the University of California, San Diego, as a professor of physics.

It enables students to take digital photographs of Earth using a camera aboard the International Space Station.

After her training at NASA in 1979, Dr. Ride served as a capsule communicator on the second and third voyages of the Space Shuttle Columbia.

Between 1981 and 1982, Dr. Ride worked to develop the shuttle’s robotic limb.
