The background of Santa Rosa De Lima

Christianity is a religion that teaches respect, kindness, devotion, and duty. St. Rose of Lima is one of the few historical figures who possessed all of these attributes. God’s message is love, and his religion is compassion, yet people who practise love and kindness are uncommon. Those who exemplify it have a distinct place next to God, and some are even revered as saints. After hearing a person’s life story, the Pope determines if they should be canonised as saints. There are more than 10,000 saints in the world, but some of their lives and names have been lost to history. However, Peru’s patron saint is not among them.

Isabel Flores de Oliva was born in the Viceroyalty of Peru’s capital of Lima. She demonstrated devotion and interest in spiritual life from a tender age. She was known by the name Rosa and was born into a noble family. Her childhood was marked by struggles and conflicts with her mother over her decision to pursue a spiritual path. Her family wanted her to get married and establish a family, as was the norm at the time.

Saint Rose was an attractive woman who had no lack of suitors. When the pressure to marry increased, she cut her hair short and applied chilli to her face, causing it to erupt. This helped her reduce the burden from her family, and they eventually granted her request. She began residing in a house constructed in their garden and opted for a simple way of life. She cared for those in need and always led a godly life, being tempted only by the Lord’s way. She was designated the patron saint of Peru, all of America, gardeners, embroiderers, and florists on April 12, 1671, when she was canonised.
