Save the Frogs Day was established in 2009 by Dr. Kerry Kriger of the organisation Save the Frogs. This holiday was established to promote amphibian education and conservation efforts.
Save the Frogs Day is an annual campaign to bring attention to the plight of frog species around the globe. This year’s event occurs on April 28. It also promotes appreciation and celebration of the amphibians’ role in maintaining the balance of nature. Frogs are in danger of extinction, so it is up to us to ensure that they continue to peacefully roam the planet. Let’s take advantage of this day to raise awareness about this endangered species.
Save the Frogs Day was established in 2009 by Dr. Kerry Kriger of the organisation Save the Frogs. This holiday was established to promote amphibian education and conservation efforts. Since the Triassic period, frogs have been a part of the Earth’s ecosystem and can be found everywhere. Not only do they play an important role in maintaining the balance of the global ecosystem, but their croaks also contribute to the ambiance of nature and in some areas signal the beginning of spring.
The little amphibians, of which there are more than 5,000 species, devour insects like mosquitoes voraciously, thereby helping to maintain human health and comfort. However, similar to numerous other animal species on Earth, amphibians are also endangered. According to Dr. Kriger, the primary threats amphibians face today are habitat destruction, disease, pollution, pesticides, and climate change, all of which threaten to hasten their global extinction. Up to 914 species of frogs are threatened with extinction, and up to 200 species have become extinct since the 1970s.
In addition, there are few regulations prohibiting the transportation of infected frogs, which can cause problems in unfamiliar environments and for those who keep them as pets or consume them as sustenance. Save the Frogs and scientists in 58 countries hold presentations and seminars at local schools, groups, and community centres during the holiday to raise awareness of frog conservation by highlighting the threats they face and presenting ways to contribute to their conservation. Save the Frogs Day aims to raise awareness of the dangers that frogs encounter in their natural habitats and to highlight the consequences of a world without frogs.
