Candles have been around for a very long time. Though no one knows for sure when people first started making candles, records show that different cultures have been doing it for more than 5,000 years. According to records from 3000 B.C., the Egyptians used animal fat and reeds to make lights. The reed wasn’t like the wicks we use now, and the wax they used was made from animal fat. Around 500 B.C., the Romans used rolled papyrus made from the pith of the papyrus plant to make candles. They melted tallow, which is made from melted beef or chicken fat, or beeswax over and over to make the first candlewick.
There is proof that people in other parts of the world also used evil lamps. Chinese candles were made from rolled rice paper, and their wax was made from bugs, seeds, or whale fat mixed together. Japanese candles are said to be made from wax that is taken from tree nuts. Boiling the fruit of the cinnamon tree produced wax in India. That’s likely the first scented candles, because when they were lit, they smelled good.
With the invention of the light bulb in 1879, candles lost their main use as a light source. After that, candles started to be used as decorations, and the first scented candles came out. By the middle of the 1980s, candles were well known as a way to improve your mood, as gifts, and as home art.
