Richard Drew was employed by the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company in the early 1920s, which produced sandpaper. He used to see how inconvenient it was for auto body shops to have to paint two-tone color cars when he delivered sandpaper samples to them. Newspapers were held on cars while painting at the time using surgical adhesive tapes or library glues. But once the newspapers were taken out, there was still residue that, when peeled off, would rip the paint off.

This gave Drew the inspiration he needed to come up with a practical and lasting solution. He went on to create masking tape using glycerin, cabinetmaker’s glue, and crêpe paper. It was removed cleanly without removing paint from cars and stuck to them effectively. Later on, Scotch Masking Tape was used to sell it.

The company debuted “Scotty McTape,” its mascot, in the 1950s. He was identified as a member of the Clan Wallace, which was the clan that William Wallace belonged to. The mascot began dressing in green plaid from Wallace Hunting and crimson tartan. Still, he was fired in the first part of the 1970s. However, the green plaid is still present on Scotch labels today. Although several manufacturers have begun producing transparent adhesive tape over time, many people still refer to it as Scotch Tape.

In recognition of his creation of Scotch Tape, a household staple today, Drew was elected into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
