The importance of clerical work to the success of an organisation cannot be overstated. Secretaries perform a crucial role, but their efforts are frequently undervalued.
Secretaries’ Day is celebrated annually on the Wednesday of the last week of April to recognise the long-neglected efforts of secretaries. This year’s event occurs on April 26. This day has been known by many names, including Admin Day, over the years, and it occurs during Administrative Professionals Week. It recognises the arduous labour performed by secretaries. There are numerous methods to honour and celebrate your secretary, but the most essential is to say “thank you.” Secretary positions are viewed as less significant, despite the fact that they are essential and enable others to perform their duties.
The importance of clerical work to the success of an organisation cannot be overstated. Secretaries perform a crucial role, but their efforts are frequently undervalued. The term’secretarius’ was first used in ancient Rome to describe a person who oversaw official and confidential affairs for powerful individuals.
Now, finally, people are beginning to recognise the tireless efforts of secretaries around the globe. Formerly, clerical jobs were reserved for males, despite the fact that secretaries are now viewed as stereotypically female. This transformation began in the 1880s. Women began to fill these positions because no education was required. Beginning with secretary positions, women entered the workforce. As males left to fight in the war, women’s interest in administrative work increased.
During World War II, secretaries’ efforts were first recognised for their arduous nature. Due to the Great Depression and low birthrate, there was a paucity of administrative personnel. In 1942, as a result, the International Association of Administrative Professionals (then known as the National Secretaries Association) was established. This non-profit organisation intended to encourage more individuals to pursue this career path and to shed light on its significance. In 1951, the Certified Professional Secretary examination was administered. They now offer many more certifications in related fields.
Harry F. Klemfuss, recognising the importance of secretaries to enterprises, created Secretary’s Day in 1952 to honour secretaries, who were only women at the time. He intended to demonstrate the importance of secretaries and encourage more women to pursue this career. He established Secretaries’ Day on June 4, but in 2000 it was shifted to the last Wednesday of April.
Obviously, aides today can be of any gender. This holiday is now observed in numerous countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and many others. This holiday reminds us of the significance of recognising these underappreciated professionals for their contributions to a welcoming and productive workplace.

The best method to show appreciation for your secretaries is to give them gifts, a card, and throw a party. Nothing delights office employees more than surprise parties and cake.
Give a speech in front of your coworkers to express your gratitude for your assistants’ efforts. Share some anecdotes about your secretaries and how they have helped you in the past.
Create a social media post to set a precedent. Demonstrate to others the significance of respecting and honouring your coworkers.
The word’secretary’ is derived from the Latin word’secretarius,’ which is derived from the verb’secernere,’ which means “to distinguish.”
This formerly male-dominated occupation is still dominated by women, with 94.2% of secretaries and administrative assistants being female.
In the past, royal palaces employed secretaries who were entrusted with highly sensitive information.
In the United States, there are 22 million secretaries.
The most distinguished secretaries are Andrea from “The Devil Wears Prada” and Pam from “The Office.”
