Sigd Day 2023: Sigd Day is observed annually in late October or November, on the 29th of the Hebrew month of Cheshvan. It is a statutory state holiday in Israel. Over time, the Jewish community in Ethiopia evolved distinctive religious and cultural observances that were specific to their homeland and people. It was crucial for the survival of the Jewish faith. Individuals had forgotten Hebrew. Shabbat did indeed manifest itself, whereas Hanukkah and Purim did not.

Ethiopian Jews wrote and recited the “Torah” in Ge’ez, a sacred language of Ethiopia. Kesim were the spiritual leaders of the community, and Sigd was the most important festival. These practices ensured the continuation of Jewish traditions despite the apparent remoteness of the Jerusalem ideal. Sigd Day observances are an integral part of Ethiopian Jewish life. The occasion ensues fifty days subsequent to Yom Kippur, uniting individuals in a joyous communal observance. Ethiopian Jews have devoted the day to reconciliation and repentance with those they have offended for millennia. Additionally, the community would observe a fast and offer prayers for their safe return to Jerusalem. Everyone congregated in the afternoon for a feast and dancing.

The aspiration to revisit Jerusalem materialized during the twentieth century. The Israeli government airlifted thousands of Ethiopians to Israel. As a commemoration of their return to Israel, the festival of Sigd took on a new significance upon their arrival. Subsequently, Ethiopian Israelis observe Sigd Day by engaging in festivities following the first part of the day of prayer. Contemporary Sigd Day celebrations are characterized by vibrant Ethiopian festivals. Every Jewish heritage is represented. Jewish heritage and diversity are vividly celebrated on Sigd Day through concerts and theatrical productions. The Ethiopian Jewish community, which claims to be Menelik I’s direct descendants, is alternatively referred to as the Beta Israel. Menelik I was, for those unaware, the progeny of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.
