Sarawak, Sabah, Singapore, and the Federation of Malaya merged in 1963 to form the Federation of Malaysia, which included Singapore. This was due to Singapore’s lack of natural resources, which necessitated Malaysia for market expansion and employment opportunities.

Due to political and civil unrest, Singapore gained independence from Malaysia later in 1965. Annually, Singapore’s independence is commemorated and celebrated with thrilling events.

The Singapore National Day parade typically occurs in Marina Bay, the National Stadium, or the Padang. Typically, the parade includes officers of the Armed Forces, Police Force, Civil Defence Force, and some political party representatives. Members of labour unions are also present during the parade. Students who are members of uniformed organisations, including Girl Guides, Scouts, and the diverse Cadet Corps. Additionally, the Singapore Air Force operates numerous military aircraft over the parade.

Since 1966, the Singapore Prime Minister has recorded and delivered the Singapore National Day Message on the eve of National Day. The message addresses domestic and international developments, economic performance and outlook, as well as national priorities and government plans. Following the address, the beautiful fireworks display can be experienced alongside the festivities, which include choir performances, school band performances, and other entertaining presentations. The audience can also participate in some of the activities, such as experiencing paragliding.
