Slinky Day is annually observed on August 30. It is a day set aside to honour an accidental Toy Hall of Fame Superstar that captivated the imagination of children across the nation. Richard James, an American naval engineer, created the Slinky in Philadelphia in 1943, and it has been in existence for over six decades. It was an instant success on the toy market, selling out within hours. On Slinky Day, children can perform Slinky acrobatics, race with Slinkies, or simply untangle Slinkies as they knot, twist, and spiral!
The background of Slinky Day
Richard James, a Navy mechanical engineer stationed at the time, discovered the Slinky when he accidentally knocked a spring off a shelf and watched as it made a series of arcs to a stack of books, a tabletop, and then the floor, where it recoiled and stood erect. The following year, James experimented with various types of steel wire until he discovered a walking spring.
The Jameses had difficulty selling Slinky to toy retailers, but in November 1945, they were granted permission to display the toy. The first 400 Slinkys sold out in less than 90 minutes, making it a huge success. 1946 marked the first appearance of Slinky at the U.S. Toy Fair. The Slinky Dog debuted in 1952. New Slinky devices were introduced in the 1950s. There are also Slinky Suzie and Slinky Crazy Eyes.
In 1960, after his wife filed for divorce, Richard James resigned from the company. In 1964, Betty James managed the company’s creditors and relocated it to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Betty James insisted that the original Slinky remain affordable, and in 1996, a Slinky cost between $1.89 and $2.20. In 1998, Plymouth, Michigan’s Poof Products, Inc., a manufacturer of foam sports objects, acquired James Industries. 2003 saw the merger of James Industries and Poof Products, Inc. to form Poof-Slinky, Inc. In addition to being a toy, Slinky has been used as a teaching instrument, a portable radio antenna, and in NASA physics experiments.
