The celebration of Smithsonian Day, which has been cancelled for 2023, occurs on September 17. On this day, museums, zoos, and cultural centres across the United States offer free admission to anyone who presents a Museum Day ticket. This function is sponsored by the magazine ‘Smithsonian’. To get a ticket, individuals have to select a museum and download it from a ‘Smithsonian’ magazine. The complete inventory of participating museums is available on the website of ‘Smithsonian’ magazine, with new museums signing up daily.
The Smithsonian Institution grew between 1765 and 1829. James Smithson, a British physicist who donated his estate in Washington to the United States, was responsible for the undertaking. Construction began in 1849. The project was designed by an architect, James Renwick Jr., and its interiors were constructed by a contractor, Gilbert Cameron. The edifice opened in 1855.
The Smithsonian Institution Act was enacted by the U.S. Senate on August 10, 1846, and signed into law by President James K. Polk. Although Congress authorised the acceptance of the Smithson bequest on July 1, 1836, it took ten years of deliberation before the Smithsonian Institution was established. Once founded, the museum contributed to the formation of a national identity based on exploration and innovation.
Joseph Henry, the museum’s first secretary, intended for it to be a centre for scientific inquiry. It also became the repository for numerous Washington and U.S. government collections — the United States Exploring Expedition of the U.S. Navy circumnavigated the globe between 1838 and 1842, collecting thousands of specimens and artefacts along the way. They were all added to the Smithsonian’s collections.
The institution quickly became irresistible to young scientists from 1857 to 1866, who formed the Megatherium Club. The Smithsonian performed an essential role in the advancement of science. Construction of the Arts and Industries Building in 1881 and The National Zoological Park in 1889 to house the Smithsonian’s Department of Living Animals marked the institution’s first expansion. Many additional extensions followed. Since its founding more than 175 years ago, the Smithsonian has become the largest museum, educational, and research institution in the world. It has twenty-one museums, the National Zoo, and nine research institutions.
