HISTORY OF SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCES DAY

The Russian Federation’s special operations forces (SOF) are tactical special forces that report to the Special Operations Forces Authority of the General Staff. In addition, it is a comprehensive and autonomous Armed Forces unit. In 2009, the first elements of what became the Special Operations Forces were transferred from the GRU as part of the ongoing 2008 Russian military reform.

The Special Operations Forces Authority was established in 2012 and declared in March 2013 by Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov. The SOF was established as a strategic asset with elite special operations, primarily international interventions such as counter-proliferation, international internal defence operations, and undertaking the most complex special operations and clandestine missions to protect the objectives of the Russian Federation.

The SOF is distinct from the Spetsnaz GRU, which was subordinate to the Primary Intelligence Directorate until 2010 and whose subordination was uncertain until 2013, when the decision was reversed and GRU special forces units were reassigned to GRU divisions and placed under GRU authority once again. Contract personnel make up the entirety of the Russian S.O.F., which consists of superior officers and regular soldiers.

According to multiple Russian official news agencies, President Vladimir Putin declared February 27 to be Special Operations Forces Day on February 26, 2015, albeit unofficially, to commemorate the establishment of Russian control over the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea building in Simferopol, Crimea on February 27, 2014.
