The History of OHRID’s Saint Clément

Missionary St. Clement of Ohrid lived in the ninth century. Theophylact of Ohrid, in his hagiography of St. Clement, states that Clement was born in the southwest region of the Bulgarian Empire, though little is known about his early life. In 840 A.D., he was born in what is now North Macedonia. Clement, also called the “enlightener of the Slava,” was a well-known follower of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, two significant missionaries who brought Christianity to the Slavic people of Pannonia, Great Moravia, and Bulgaria.

Worried about the increasing Byzantine influence at the time, Bulgarian King Boris I made the decision to establish old Slavonic as the official language of his empire. Thus, he founded two Slavonic schools, one at Ohrid under the direction of Clement, which taught Old Slavonic in Bulgarian. Ohrid became a significant cultural hub for the Bulgarian Empire as a result. Clement went on to become the first Slav bishop of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in 893 A.D.

Clement, who died in 916 A.D., added a Slavic flavor to the teachings. His final resting place was the monastery he founded in Ohrid, dedicated to St. Panteleimon. The fact that St. Clement is the patron saint of North Macedonia, the city of Ohrid, and the Macedonian Orthodox Church serves as evidence of his significance and impact in the region. From 2007, St. Clement of Ohrid has been observed as a public holiday. As a national holiday, St. Clement of Ohrid Day is observed exclusively in North Macedonia.
