The St. Maroun Day History

It is unknown how exactly St. Maroun was born. Records have indicated that he was born in what is now Syria in the year 300 B.C. St. Maroun resisted conventional practices as a lifelong quest of wisdom. He was well-known for holding that God is related to everything and that everything is connected to people.

St. Maroun conducted his prayers and meditations by exposing himself to the sun and the worst of weather, including hail, rain, and snow. He converted his pagan temple into a Christian church. Saint. Maroun was a fervent follower of the Catholic faith who felt that the weak and in need of direction should be helped. His leadership and methods clearly worked, as he attracted many disciples throughout the Cyr region.

Later in life, he turned hermit and relocated to the Taurus Mountains in Cyrrhus, which are close to the ancient city of Antioch. He relocated to the highlands in search of religious discipline and peace. The exact date of St. Mavroun’s death at Arethusa is unknown, while some people place it between 407 and 423 B.C. Some believe that he is buried in Brad Village.

In observance of the saint’s dedication to the Kfarhay church, the Maronite Church declared a feast day. It was originally observed in January, but in the seventeenth century, February 9 was chosen as the new date. Since then, February 9 has been set aside as St. Maroun Day to honor the revered saint and founder of the monastic movement.
