The background of Start Up Day Across America

Jared Polis and Darrell Issa founded Startup Day Across America in 2013 to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and encourage people across the United States to launch their own businesses. A startup is a highly scalable, typically technology-based venture until it reaches a large scope of operation. Edison General Electric, for instance, was one of the first American startups. Other giants such as Nokia were also once startups before becoming major corporations.

The emergence of Silicon Valley is closely related to the American startup culture. Silicon ‘Valley’ refers to enterprises located in a particular region of the state of California, near Stanford University. The term was coined in 1971. Hence the name, these companies manufactured semiconductors. Since the 1980s, the term has been applied to the communities of Palo Alto, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and Mountain View. The startup surge commenced concurrently with the dot-com boom. This era was marked by a greater adoption of technology and a belief that the internet could revolutionise the world.

The 2000s were a period of reinvigorated fervour in the world of startups. Inevitably, the Tech startups of the decade shaped the cultural zeitgeist and altered perceptions for decades. In this decade, companies such as Facebook, Uber, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tinder, and Tesla were founded. Even twenty years later, the startup ecosystem remains robust. Beyond Silicon Valley, start-up enthusiasm has extended to every corner of the country.
