This day has been designated to honour, venerate, celebrate, and remember the 1991 declaration of independence from Yugoslavia. Do you know when Slovenia achieved its independence? If you guessed June 25, consider the following fact. Although Statehood Day in Slovenia is celebrated on June 25, the nation did not achieve independence until June 26. Let’s learn everything about Slovenia’s Statehood Day’s history, significance, important events, methods to celebrate, and interesting facts!

The background of Statehood Day

Statehood Day is a Slovenian national holiday commemorating the country’s independence from Yugoslavia. Despite the fact that Slovenia’s formal declaration of independence did not occur until June 26, 1991, Statehood Day is celebrated annually on June 25, the date on which the initial acts of independence were passed to declare Slovenia independent.

Independence and Unity Day, which is celebrated annually on December 26, is commonly confused with Statehood Day, but it is a completely distinct holiday. It commemorates the official proclamation of the results of the referendum conducted three days earlier on December 26, 1990. On this referendum, 95 percent of all Slovenian electors supported making Slovenia an independent nation. This celebration was short-lived, as the proclamation initiated the ‘Ten-Day War’ with Yugoslavia. During this conflict, Yugoslavian army tanks travelled from their barracks in Slovenia and Croatia to Slovenia’s borders with Italy, culminating in a terrible clash. In October 1991, the final Yugoslav forces departed Slovenia.

Today, Slovenia is one of the most peace-loving countries in the world, rating fifth out of 163 countries on the Global Peace Index for 2021. With an Environmental Performance Index (EPI) score of 67.30, it is also one of the world’s most environmentally-friendly countries, trailing only Denmark, the United Kingdom, Finland, Malta, Sweden, and Luxembourg. In addition, after so many years of independence, an extraordinary 53.6% of Slovenia is protected land, which is a higher percentage than any other country on the planet except Venezuela.
