HISTORY OF STATEHOOD DAY IN ARIZONA

Arizona’s history predates the formation of America. Before European colonists arrived in Arizona, various Native American tribes, such as the Anasazi, Mogollon, and Hohokam, inhabited the territory of the state. It developed into a fertile region that supported numerous civilizations. The Spanish were the first Europeans to set foot in Arizona in the 16th century. The majority of Spanish troops were searching for Cibola, one of the legendary Seven Cities of Gold.

Arizona became a part of the Territory of Nueva California when Mexico achieved independence from Spain in the 19th century. During the Mexican-American War of 1847, the U.S. would gain control of the region. Until the southern portion of the region seceded and formed the Territory of Arizona under the Confederate States of America, the area was administered by the United States government as part of the New Mexico Territory. Arizona’s ability to join the United States seemed like a far-off fantasy at this point!

On February 24, 1863, the federal government proclaimed a new Arizona territory comprising the western half of New Mexico territory. The newly drawn boundaries would eventually be used when Arizona became a state of the United States. Arizona became the 48th state to join the Union on February 14, 1912. The Statehood Day celebration in Arizona in 2022 commemorated 110 years of Arizona’s statehood. Arizona is most well-known for the Grand Canyon and its abundant copper supply.
