After achieving independence, the Indian government renamed the northeastern region North Eastern Frontier Agency, and when it began to assemble its union, it incorporated N.E.F.A. and renamed it Arunachal Pradesh. It was granted statehood and officially became a state of the Republic of India 15 years after it was renamed.
