Tatting Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Tatting originated in the early eighteenth century. It evolved from an earlier craft known as knotting. The Chinese and Egyptians used knotting to embellish their garments.

Tatting Day is an international holiday observed annually on April 1. Tatting is the art of knotting threads to create delicate lace. It is one of the earliest lace-making techniques and has been practised for centuries. Tatters use specific techniques to create graceful items such as lace collars, lace edging, and doilies, among other ornamental pieces. On Tatting Day, people around the world engage in lace tatting, share their hobby with family and friends, and consume a substantial quantity of delectable chocolate.

The background of Tatting Day

Tatting originated in the early eighteenth century. It evolved from an earlier craft known as knotting. The Chinese and Egyptians used knotting to embellish their garments. It is believed that the transition from knotting to tatting began in Italy and quickly spread throughout Europe. People, however, were slower to adopt the term ‘tatting’ and still referred to its examples as ‘knotting’

In 1843, tatting was introduced formally in a literary work. Eleonore Riego de la Branchardiere, a Frenchwoman, published a book on tatting in 1851, detailing how to create various tatting patterns. She also designed with picots as the primary motif. By the 19th century, many fashion magazines had published tatting-themed issues. In that era, women of all social classes tatted with shuttles made of inexpensively carved wood, intricately carved ivory, and gem-encrusted precious metal. Frequently, women would create exquisite lace for themselves and their families. In some artworks, women are depicted wielding a tatting shuttle or tatted lace gracefully. Tatting was a source of immense pride.

The craft is so highly esteemed that its name exists in over 70 languages. Since the late 1990s, April 1 has been a day to honour tatting and talented tatters worldwide.
