The instant we hear the word “teddy bear,” our minds and hearts are filled with a warm, fuzzy sensation. Since its inception, the teddy bear has worn many hats, from cuddly companion to collector’s item. Though few people know the origin of the term “teddy bear” or the concept of this plush toy. Actually, it’s quite an intriguing tale. During a hunting trip in 1902, the then-president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, declined to shoot a bear that had been tied to a tree. He stated that shooting it would be unsportsmanlike, and thus the legend of ‘Teddy’s bear’ was born.
This encouraged certain toymakers to produce and sell bears with the name “Teddy Bear,” and since then they have become an integral part of the lives of people across the globe and of all ages. In the early 1900s, this invention inspired the creation of the song “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic.” John W. Bratton initially composed the song’s melody, and Jimmy Kennedy, an Irish songwriter, added the lyrics to the composition many years later. Over the years, children and adults equally have cherished and appreciated this song.
Due to the song’s immense popularity, Teddy Bear Picnic Day was created to allow us to commemorate the simple and small joys of a picnic with these stuffed animals. Remember to prepare your teddy bears for this unique and enjoyable holiday.
