The Terry Fox Foundation hosts 9,000 Terry Fox Runs annually. While the Terry Fox Run is conducted on the same day as Terry Fox Day, the Foundation also collaborates with numerous schools to organise the Terry Fox School Run.

Terry Fox Day is observed on August 7 to honour a wonderful man, a great foundation, and a great cause. Terry Fox ran across Canada for 143 days and 5,373 kilometres to raise funds and awareness for cancer after discovering a malignant tumour on his knee and enduring surgery to remove 15 centimetres of his leg. So, on Terry Fox Day, get involved: run a race, donate money, or raise money — however you choose to participate, be sure to honour this extraordinary individual.

The background of Terry Fox Day

The Terry Fox Foundation hosts 9,000 Terry Fox Runs annually. While the Terry Fox Run is conducted on the same day as Terry Fox Day, the Foundation also collaborates with numerous schools to organise the Terry Fox School Run. For each of these races, 82 cents of every dollar raised is donated directly to a variety of cancer research initiatives, including lung, ovarian, pancreatic, paediatric, and many others. Terry Fox still managed to run 5,373 kilometres after being diagnosed with cancer and having his limb amputated. Anyone who participates in a Terry Fox Foundation event is inspired by this man’s story and legacy. Terry continues to provide optimism to those battling cancer as a result of the legacy he has left behind. The Terry Fox Foundation has helped raise over $715 million to support cancer research.

The Terry Fox Research Institute, which combines the clinical expertise of cancer physicians with the innovative laboratory expertise of scientific researchers, has also been established. All of these are stages towards discovering a cancer cure. Terrance Stanley Fox is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba as Terry Fox. Terry’s right limb is diagnosed with a malignant tumour. The training for his Marathon of Hope, a run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research, commences. The Terry Fox Run is transformed into a Trust under the name The Terry Fox Foundation.

Following its success in Canada, the Terry Fox Run is launched in the following countries: Australia, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Saudi Arabia, United States of America, and Zimbabwe.
