The ten years’ war, which was initiated by a proclamation by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in 1868 and referred to as the “Grito de Yara” or “Cry of Yara,” was the initial of three armed confrontations against the Spanish occupancy of Cuban territory. This date, like all others associated with independence, is extremely significant to Cubans because it commemorates their national identity, culture, and heritage.

The background of The Beginning of the Ten Years’ War

The Republic of Cuba is an archipelago nation comprised of Isla de la Juventud, the principal island, and more than a thousand minor entities. At the juncture of the northern Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean, it is situated in the southernmost region of Mexico, to the east of the Yucatán Peninsula. Despite its current state of autonomy, this did not always be the situation.

During the late 1800s Peninsular Wars in Europe, Joseph, the sibling of Napoleon, ascended to the throne of Spain. Independence movements were instigated in numerous Spanish colonies in South and Central America by those who lacked allegiance to the new regime. Cuba initially maintained its allegiance to Spain; however, as the century unfolded, its yearning for independence intensified, accompanied by mounting animosity towards the Spanish regime due to its perceived corruption and repressive nature.

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, an affluent and influential proprietor of a sugar mill, proclaimed independence on October 10, 1868, accompanied by his adherents. Commencing with the Ten Years’ War, the ‘Grito de Yara’ marked the onset of three armed confrontations leading up to independence. The Ten Years’ War, despite culminating in Cuba’s capitulation to the Spanish in May 1878, served as a turning point in the nation’s struggle for independence from Spain, culminating in its triumph in December 1898.

It is also believed that the events of October 1868 directly contributed to the abolition of slavery in Cuba in 1886. The 1898 Spanish withdrawal from Cuba was an immediate consequence of the United States’ triumph in the Spanish–American War. Cuba was governed by the United States military for nearly four years prior to its formal independence on May 20, 1902.
