The Foundation of Quito Day 2023: Date, History and activites to do

Early in the 20th century, Ecuador became the first nation to outlaw the death sentence

The Foundation of Quito Day 2023: The Foundation of Quito Day is celebrated by The Quitu people, who were indigenous to Ecuador, and the Incans, who came from Peru, inhabited the country before the Spanish arrived. Although a great deal of information about these people has been lost to time, we do know that on December 6, 1534, 204 Spanish settlers under the leadership of Sebastián de Benalcázar built the city of Quito.

History

Due to the settlement’s rapid growth, a city was established in seven years, and it shortly after became a Spanish administrative district. Following Quito’s establishment, the city saw tremendous expansion and prosperity, but there was also far too much violence and bloodshed throughout this time. Numerous uprisings against Spanish control were launched over the years, but many of them were put down when the Spanish military used force rather than diplomacy to put an end to the insurgents.

After over 300 years of Spanish domination, Quito and the neighboring areas finally achieved freedom in 1810 through a series of arduous conflicts. Even after Ecuador broke away from Spain and became a republic, political unrest and citizen-on-citizen violence continued. Religious and political leaders were killed during the course of the following century as new rebel organizations appeared in the nation.

In 1882, toward the close of the XVIII century, the populace rebelled against Ignacio de Veintimilla’s government. Another despot ruled the country after Eloy Alfaro took office as president a year later. After Alfaro’s capture and murder in 1912, Ecuador took a break from hostilities.

Quito is a dynamic and thriving city with a rich history and culture that would interest both locals and foreign tourists, despite such a turbulent past. The Foundation of Quito Day celebrations are full of energy, fun, and humor.
