The background of Thirsty Thursday

We do not know much about Thirsty Thursday’s origins. However, revelry and the weekend are nearly always associated with college students letting loose after a week of studying. Youth have set partying trends in drinking games, music, cuisine, and even attire for as long as we can remember. Thirsty Thursday is also a great method to catch up on the newest cultural trends and observe how the current generation celebrates. At its core, Thirsty Thursday is a celebration of life and vitality, reviving us after a week of fatigue.

However, is socialising an entirely new phenomenon? Certainly not! In the 1800s, nearly 200 years ago, dancing, drinking, and remaining out late emerged as the modern form of partying. The origins of club culture are somewhat obscure, but the earliest gatherings of this nature were typically held in warehouses. In the 1940s, the ballrooms of the nineteenth century were transformed into jazz venues where young people frequently sang and danced late into the night. In the 1950s, discothèques evolved from jazz venues. In the 1970s, however, the party culture took hold with the proliferation of pop songs, themed clothing, and disc jockeys producing personalised music for the dance floors. The genre of music known as “dance numbers” became a craze and rapidly rose to prominence.

The 1980s and 1990s witnessed the commercialization of nightlife. However, shortly thereafter, in the 2010s, clubbing began to decline. This is primarily due to the fact that newer generations have adopted social media and dating apps and no longer need to go to clubs to meet new people.
