Transgender Day of Visibility is a March 31 international occasion honouring the resiliency and achievements of the transgender community. On this day, we celebrate the transgender population among us, raise awareness about the difficulties they face, and advocate for more protected rights for them in an effort to reform society and empower this community, as it so justly deserves. Let’s join forces with the trans community to celebrate not “fitting in” at a time when we all wish to stand out!

The background of Transgender Day of Visibility

There is no doubt that transgender people continue to endure discrimination on a global scale. It has been subjected to immense harassment and inequality in every part of the globe for the’sin’ of being born different, whether in the workplace, schools, or society.

Rachel Crandall, a transgender activist based in the United States, founded this day in 2009 to bring attention to the tremendous burden of discrimination the community encounters in every conceivable setting. The need for a day of ‘visibility’ for the transgender community is indicative of the widespread oppression they endure. Crandall wished to emphasise the fact that the only internationally recognised transgender-specific day is Transgender Day of Remembrance, which honours deceased members of the community, and that there is no day to honour living transgender people. In 2014, activists in Ireland and Scotland observed the day, while in 2015, many transgender individuals participated in the event via social media campaigns. By posting photographs and personal anecdotes, they were able to make the day go viral.

Therefore, on Transgender Day of Visibility, March 31, each year, we recognise and honour their contributions, achievements, and unwavering courage in the face of injustice. Through this Day of Visibility, we aim to promote moral responsibility and tolerance, and to remove restrictions on transgender people’s rights.
