Every year on July 25, Tunisia celebrates the nation’s foundation. The objective is to commemorate the day they voted to terminate the monarchy. In 1881, the French seized control of Tunisia. In 1883, the territory became a French protectorate. The independence movement began in 1920, and the “Destour” political party was founded around the same time. In 1934, there was a marked increase in cries for independence. Habib Bourguiba established a new political organisation known as “Neo Destour.”
Bourguiba led Tunisia to independence and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in 1956. The king was Muhammad VIII al-Amin, and Bourguiba was the prime minister. Some individuals ultimately viewed the constitutional monarchy as a French decision, and many believed the king to be pro-France. As a consequence, the National Assembly changed the country’s political structure from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. The monarchy was finally abolished on July 25, 1957. Following the king’s surrender, the Tunisian Republic was formally proclaimed. Habib Bourguiba became the nation’s first president. He was in the military for 31 years. Eventually, Bourguiba was deposed by a medical coup d’état.
Republic Day in Tunisia commemorates significant occurrences in the country’s history. Throughout the holiday, numerous fairs and exhibitions are conducted to showcase and celebrate Tunisian cuisine and handicrafts.
