The background of Tuvalu Independence Day

Tuvalu is comprised of nine individual islands. Three islands named Nanumanga, Niulakita, and Niutao are reef islands. Funafuti, Nui, Nukufetau, Nanumea, Vaitupu, and Nukulaelae are the names of the remaining six coral atolls.

Polynesians were the original inhabitantss of the islands of Tuvalu. Historians believe that the Polynesian people migrated across the Pacific Oceans approximately 3,000 years ago and settled on eight of Tuvalu’s islands during this time. The Spanish navigator lvaro de Mendaa was among the first Europeans to make contact with Tuvalu. He was unable to set foot on the islands, however. Other European mariners and navigators visited the island, including whalers who bartered for coconuts from the Tuvaluan islands.

The British Empire discovered the islands through Captain Gibson of the Royal Navy ship HMS Curacoa, who declared them British Protectorates. When the British Western Pacific Territories administration terminated, the islands became part of the British Colonies. After the Second World War and the establishment of the United Nations, a special committee assisted nations in the decolonization process. As a result, Tuvalu adopted a ministerial form of government chosen through general elections. Tuvalu eventually achieved independence under the Commonwealth.
