Umuganura Day is a major celebration in Rwanda, held annually on the first Friday of August. This year’s date is August 4. It is a Rwandan public holiday that heralds in numerous enjoyable activities in which the entire country partakes. Thanksgiving is also known as National Harvest Day because it celebrates the commencement of the harvest season. The literal translation of Umuganura is “first-fruits festival.” The festival is observed for one week preceding Umuganura day. On this day, artists’ unions and federation members of the Rwanda Arts Council put on breathtaking art performances.

Umuganura celebrates both Rwanda’s cultural heritage and its achievements in various economic sectors. In Rwandan culture, the crops of the new harvest are not consumed until the elders have tasted them. Thanksgiving is associated with giving thanks to progenitors and God for all blessings. Despite being dubbed a harvest festival, the event occurs before the harvest.

A successful harvest is crucial in Rwanda, where 80% of labourers are engaged in agricultural activities, which account for approximately 40% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Rwanda’s most valuable exports are tea and coffee, which account for approximately 80% of its agricultural exports.

Rwanda has a lengthy history and was colonised by two different countries. Invasion and colonisation of Rwanda by Germany in 1899 as part of German East Africa was followed by an invasion by Belgium during World War I. These protracted wars and conflicts put an end to Umuganura, so it was not celebrated for many years. Years passed, and in July 1962, Rwanda attained its independence. Even after that, Rwanda experienced a great deal of violence, but the country eventually recovered.

In 2011, despite its long heritage, Umuganura became a public holiday. Typically, the celebration begins within individual families before the community joins together for a larger event. Umuganura also provides an opportunity to commemorate the annual achievements of sectors that contribute to the nation’s development.
