Commemoration Day 2022 (UAE): Date, History and Significance
The United Arab Emirates National Day is celebrated on December 2 each year. It marks the country’s Union Day, when the seven emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah came together to form the UAE.
This historic event took place on December 2, 1971 and was a watershed moment in the history of the Emirates. Prior to this, the emirates were separate entities governed by their own rulers. The idea of union was first mooted in 1968 when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became the Ruler of Abu Dhabi. He envisioned a strong and prosperous country that could serve as a model for other Arab states.
With the support of his fellow rulers, Sheikh Zayed set about making his vision a reality. A number of key infrastructure projects were undertaken including the construction of an airport in Abu Dhabi and a port in Dubai. These developments helped to foster closer ties between the emirates and laid the foundations for further economic growth.
On July 19, 1971, Britain announced its intention to withdraw from the Persian Gulf region by the end of 1971. This created a sense of urgency among the rulers of the emirates who realized that they needed to unite if they were to survive independently. After months of negotiations, an agreement was finally reached on December 2, 1971 and the United Arab Emirates was born.
