Cooperation between governments in the south has aided in establishing peace as a manifestation of global diplomacy and unity among numerous nations. Cooperation between nations has been a fundamental principle of the United Nations since its inception. Due to the increase in disparities in income, G.D.P., and human development between countries of different regions, South-South cooperation in particular began acquiring prominence. In fact, one of the goals of this celebration is to encourage cooperation between developing nations. This resulted in the establishment of the United Nations Development Programme in 1965 and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation in 1974.
This office is the primary organising body for the International Day for South-South Cooperation and coordinates the various U.N. initiatives pertaining to cooperation. In 1978, following the Global South Conference, the United Nations implemented one of the earliest programmes facilitating this form of cooperation. With the advancement of technology, the importance of technical cooperation for the economic development of developing nations has grown. The United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation became an annual event, conducted to establish specific benchmarks, programmes, and goals for facilitating this form of international cooperation.
The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation became a separate entity within the United Nations in 2009, granting it more resources and the ability to plan large-scale cooperative programmes. The Agenda for Sustainable Development was ratified in 2015, making it one of the most significant documents regarding the South-South Cooperation initiative of the United Nations. With this adoption, multiple governments will collaborate to implement programmes of technical cooperation, which will contribute to the economic development of developing nations.
