United Nations Day 2023: We observe United Nations Day on October 24, the anniversary of the United Nations Charter of 1945. In order to commemorate today, it is necessary to reflect on seventy-five years of history, struggle, and success. Therefore, today, pause to reflect on the profound influence that the United Nations has exerted in every region of the world.

United Nations Day 2023: HISTORY

Following the devastation and anarchy of World War II, the United Nations was founded in 1945 with the intention of averting further catastrophic conflicts. On April 25, fifty governments convened in San Francisco to commence composing the United Nations Charter. The charter was subsequently adopted on June 25 and entered into force on October 24. Human rights protection, international peace and security maintenance, humanitarian assistance provision, adherence to international law, and promotion of sustainable development are all objectives of the United Nations.

The onset of the Cold War, which pitted the United States against the Soviet Union, quickly complicated their objective of preserving global peace. The number of Security Council resolutions more than doubled and the budget for peacekeeping grew substantially between 1988 and 2000, following the end of the Cold War. With new members, however, came new challenges. During the 1990s, the United Nations was confronted with numerous crises involving Yugoslavia, Somalia, Haiti, and Mozambique. Following U.S. withdrawal in Somalia due to casualties in the Battle of Mogadishu, their mission was deemed unsuccessful. Similarly, their Bosnian endeavor encountered censure for its lack of determination in the midst of ethnic cleansing.

Although October 24 is observed as United Nations Day in observance of the ratification of the 1945 Charter, the date did not become the official holiday until 1948. Then, in 1971, the General Assembly of the United Nations recommended that all UN member states observe the date as a national holiday. The 72nd United Nations Day is today, and according to U.N. leaders, its purpose is to emphasize the critical nature of sustainable development. Altruistically striving to improve the quality of life for all, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has facilitated the establishment of seventeen objectives that the organization intends to achieve by 2030.

The organizations contributed a total of $1 billion to combat starvation in fifty countries via the program, ultimately assisting 59 million individuals.
