The Uruguay Carnival is an annual festival celebrated in Uruguay from the third week of January to the middle of March. It begins on February 20 this year. Carnival is associated with the Murga, candombe, and tablados. For many years, the carnival has been a popular tradition in the country. The activities performed during the ceremonies have evolved over time while retaining their cultural essence. Different comparsas play drums and dance joyfully to the music during the Uruguay Carnival, which can be compared to a parade of dancers. The largest carnival celebrations, which last up to 40 days, are held in the capital, Montevideo.

The background of Uruguay Carnival

The Uruguay Carnival is the largest carnival celebration in Montevideo, the nation’s capital. The event features a variety of cultural activities, such as street dance parades. There is a beautiful artistic competition at the Teatro de Verano, also known as the “Summer Theater.” The carnival celebrations in Uruguay and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are very different. This is because they do not observe the Christian calendar of carnival, which typically concludes at the start of Lent and approximately six weeks before Easter. In Uruguay, however, carnival begins in the third week of January and lasts until mid-March.

Midway through the eighteenth century, slaves were granted one day to celebrate their cultural identity. These festivities were filled with the drum-based music Candombe, which was very entertaining. Even after the slaves won their freedom, the celebrations continued. Eventually, the candombe style merged with traditional Uruguayan music. This musical amalgamation resulted in a fusion of African and Uruguayan rhythms.

When the carnival begins in the third week of January, the Inaugural Parade is the first event. The Uruguayan carnival lasts approximately forty consecutive days. If rain delays the festivities, they can continue for longer. Months before the main festivities and parades, the Uruguayan Carnival begins to stir. There are performances by renowned musicians and artists. People enjoy weeklong comedy stage productions that feature masterful parodists of classic satire who parody the ways of the world. Only two days are designated as official holidays for Uruguayan citizens.
