This territory, formally known as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, is located in South America. The country proclaimed independence from Brazil on August 25, 1825. However, independence was not acknowledged until August 27, 1828, when the Treaty of Montevideo was signed at the conclusion of the three-year Cisplatine War. Brazil and Argentina reached an agreement to recognise Uruguay as an independent “buffer” state between them. The nation’s first constitution was adopted on July 18, 1830.
