Every year, the Republic of Vanuatu celebrates Independence Day on July 30. This holiday commemorates Vanuatu’s independence on July 30, 1980, from the joint authority of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and France. Vanuatu, formerly known as New Hebrides, had been ruled by both European powers for approximately 74 years before beginning to advocate for independence in the 1970s. The November 1979 elections produced Prime Minister Walter Lini, and the independence date was set for July 30, 1980, after which the Anglo-French troops left Vanuatu.
In 1980, Vanuatu obtained independence from the United Kingdom. British interference with Vanuatu began in July 1774, when British explorer Captain James Cook landed on the islands. From July to September 1774, he explored the islands, eventually naming them ‘New Hebrides’ in allusion to the Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. Beginning in 1839, an increasing number of Europeans, predominantly Protestant and Roman Catholic missionaries, arrived in the New Hebrides in an effort to convert the islanders to Christianity. Cotton, coffee, cocoa, mangoes, and coconuts were among the Australian goods imported by British subjects. French colonists followed in their footsteps, and by 1906, the French outnumbered the British by 173 people.
The British and French governments created the Anglo-French Condominium to jointly administrate the islands in 1906. The Anglo-French Condominium required the operation of two legal, governmental, judicial, and financial systems simultaneously. However, native Vanuatu citizens were not permitted to become citizens of either nation. The victims were also subjected to additional forms of labour exploitation. During World War II, when France fell to Germany, the British gained the upper hand on the islands. As the war drew to a conclusion, the government of the Condominium struggled to reassert its authority.
In the 1970s, independence movements and agitation began, with indigenous people establishing their own parties. Following several abortive elections, the Anglo-French and indigenous parties reached a compromise. Independence was slated for 30 July 1980, while elections between the two major parties were conducted. New Hebrides, now known as the Republic of Vanuatu, became independent on July 30, 1980, under a new government lead by Prime Minister Walter Lini.
