The second Friday of October is designated as Vet Nurse Day in honor of the nurses who contribute significantly to the field of veterinary medicine. The date of occurrence is October 13 this year. The Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia (V.N.C.A.) initially instituted Vet Nurse Day with the intention of “raising awareness regarding the critical role that veterinary nurses play in the veterinary sector and in the broader community.”

The background of Vet Nurse Day

This line of inquiry regarding veterinary medicine dates back to 3000 B.C. in Mesopotamia, where an individual named Urlugaledinna was revered as a “expert in treating animals.” Historical records have been replete with references to veterinary practices throughout the globe ever since. One of the earliest documented references appeared in sacred Hindu texts in 1900 B.C. In contrast, the official inception of veterinary medicine did not occur until 1761, when Claude Bourgelat established the first veterinary school in Lyon, France. The London Veterinary College was established in 1791 as a result of the Odiham Agricultural Society, which established formal veterinary practices in Britain.

In order to promote veterinary medicine and its advocates, the American Veterinary Medical Association was founded in 1863. In 1965, for the purpose of overseeing veterinary pharmaceuticals, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) additionally established the Veterinary Medical Branch, which subsequently evolved into the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM).

Over the centuries, veterinary medicine has experienced numerous developments. At first, its emphasis was on the treatment of livestock; however, over time, its scope has broadened to encompass both domesticated and untamed animals. Presently, veterinarians and para-veterinary personnel, including technicians and vet nurses, diagnose, treat, and ensure the health and safety of a wide variety of animals. They are frequently obligated to ensure the welfare of animals. Additionally, they aid in the maintenance of the food chain and the prevention of zoonotic disease transmission from animals to humans.
