Vietnam Peace Day 2024: Vietnam Peace Day, observed on January 27, is significant in both American and Vietnamese history since it commemorates the signing of the Paris Peace Accords, also known as the “Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Viet Nam,” by the United States, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the Viet Cong. As a result, US involvement in the Vietnam War was essentially ended. Did you know that during this war’s 20 years, more than 58,000 Americans lost their lives? Yes, in addition to the fatalities on the opposite side, almost 150,000 American soldiers suffered serious injuries.

Vietnam Peace Day History

For both the country and the soldiers, the American experience in Vietnam was a protracted and agonizing one. It was regarded as the most turbulent time in American history since the Civil War and had a considerable negative impact on American culture. When Japanese forces invaded French-ruled Vietnam during World War II, the Vietnam War began. Political leader Ho Chi Minh founded Viet Minh in response to Chinese and Soviet Communism at the time. After losing World War II, Japan left Vietnam and ceded control to Bao Dai, the emperor whom France supported.

Seizing the chance, the Viet Minh forces took control of Hanoi in the north and proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, with Ho as its president. Conversely, in July, Bao established the state of Vietnam, with Saigon serving as its capital. Bao yearned for a nation steeped in Western culture, whereas Ho desired a communist model. This is the struggle that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam.

The United States entered the conflict in 1954, supporting South Vietnam per its stance against any allies of the Soviet Union. Following an arduous and horrifying twenty years of conflict, North Vietnam and the United States signed the final peace treaty in January 1973, and North Vietnam withdrew its soldiers from Vietnam. Vietnam Peace Day was established on this day. But for a further fifteen years, North and South Vietnam were at war. Vietnam’s economy is expanding now, and its citizens are relishing the freedom that comes with it. Let’s remember and pay tribute to the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives throughout this war on Vietnam Peace Day.
