Vietnam Veterans Day is celebrated annually on March 29. Nine million Americans endured hardships and made sacrifices during the Vietnam War. However, the holiday also honours the families of the former soldiers who supported them before and after the conflict.
Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia were involved in a protracted and expensive war. It occurred between November 1, 1955 and April 30, 1975, a total of 19 years prior to Saigon’s collapse. As Vietnam’s primary ally, the United States’ participation in the conflict significantly determined its outcome. In 1961, former U.S. President John F. Kennedy dispatched a delegation to Vietnam to assess the situation there. It was discovered that the United States increased economic, military, and technical assistance to Ngo Dinh Diem in order to defeat the Viet Cong. Kennedy increased American aid in Vietnam due to the “domino theory,” which suggests that if one Southeast Asian country collapses, the others will follow. By 1962, there were as many as 9,000 U.S. troops stationed within the country.
By March 1965, U.S. aid to Vietnam persisted with the support of Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon Johnson. By June of the same year, there were 82,000 American soldiers. A month later, 100,000 additional personnel were assigned, followed by another 100,000 a year later. The number of U.S. troops reached 500,000 by November 1967; however, 15,058 were slain and 109,558 were wounded.
Washington witnessed a massive anti-war movement on November 5, 1969. More than two hundred fifty thousand Americans called for the withdrawal of military forces from Vietnam. President Richard Nixon officially withdrew American combat forces from Vietnam on March 29, 1973. The first Vietnam Veterans Day was observed the following year.
