Wear a Star Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Child Mortality

The first Wear a Star Day celebrations were held in 2010, but little is known about the origins of the holiday. We also do not know who began the holiday.

Wear a Star Day is annually observed on April 12. The day commemorates all young children who have perished and left behind a void in their families. The grief of mortality is insurmountable regardless of age, but it is particularly unfair for young children. On Wear a Star Day, we come together to express our grief, offer each other support, and remember the children who were cherished by their peers. It is a solemn observation that commemorates life, regardless of how brief or abruptly it ended.

The background of Wear a Star Day

The first Wear a Star Day celebrations were held in 2010, but little is known about the origins of the holiday. We also do not know who began the holiday. The mood of the day, however, suggests that the holiday was likely begun by someone coping with their own grief after the loss of a child. The day is commemorated by attaching a star to one’s clothing and explaining that it honours a deceased “little star.” You can also encourage your peers and coworkers to participate in the day and honour children whose lives were cut tragically short.

But how are children most prone to die? Unfortunately, the answer is yes in many respects. Children are often the most vulnerable population in conflict zones. They are killed by weapons, starvation, extreme temperatures, and lack of medical care. More generations of children are likely to perish as a result of violence the more impoverished a country is or the longer a conflict lasts. In such situations, the mortality rate among the very young is frequently elevated. Only through the concerted efforts of governments and peacekeeping organisations can these calamities be avoided.

Among the silent killers of infants are also diseases that affect the young. Cancers, heart diseases, nerve diseases, and certain genetic ailments are examples. In such instances, infants may perish despite prompt medical care. Miscarriages and natal infections are additional causes of infant mortality.

5 FACTS REGARDING CHILD MORTALITY

Approximately 99 percent of newborn fatalities occur in extremely poor countries.

In war-torn nations such as Yemen, an infant is killed every ten minutes.

The neonatal period, or the first 28 days of a baby’s existence, is the most dangerous.

About 45 percent of deaths among infants younger than five are attributable to malnutrition.

The infant of a robust mother has a lower risk of premature death.
