Welsh Language Music Day 2024: This year’s Welsh Language Music Day is on February 9, which is the second Friday in February. It honors Welsh music in all its manifestations, including electronica, punk, hip-hop, folk, and indie. The entire purpose of this day is to introduce the globe to the Welsh language and its rich musical heritage. An additional goal is to increase the number of Welsh speakers and learners by the year 2050. Throughout the observance of this day, concerts, events, and more take place throughout Wales and the world.
The Welsh have a rich musical heritage. Their early songs, which date back to the 1600s, were frequently associated with different feasts and holidays, such as Shrove Tuesday and New Year’s Day. Songs from this era frequently had repetition, much like in a carol.
Welsh music was outlawed in an attempt to advance the English language by the Act of Union, which brought the Scottish and English parliaments together to form the Parliament of Great Britain. Welsh music was further banned throughout the Methodist church’s rise to power in the 18th and 19th centuries, as the church disapproved of any traditional song and dance.
Several events led to the explosive rebirth of Welsh music in the late 1800s: Welsh music clubs were established in both Wales and London; in the 1890s, Nicholas Bennett released “Alawon fy Ngwlad,” a collection of traditional Welsh songs (Tunes of my Land).
19th-century composers contributed to this change. Some composed secular hymns and melodies, while others returned to their lands to compose music geared toward the London population. Wales was turning out a lot of talented people by the following century, particularly in the opera scene.
Subsequently, despite their occasional emulation of American music, other singing heroes and bands, such as Bonnie Tyler and Budgie, achieved national and international renown. The world was eventually exposed to Welsh music when B.B.C. broadcast Welsh language radio shows, such as Noson Lowen in the 1940s and Hob Y Deri Dando in the 1960s.
The Welsh music scene has been described as “thriving” by the media worldwide, which is mostly due to their embracing of experimentation in the form of punk, metal, and other genres.
The Welsh music sector is thriving today, reaching listeners worldwide with its distinct sound.
