Woolworth’s Day 2023: Date, History, Facts

Frank W. Woolworth, the company's founder, was born in the United States in 1852. He was an entrepreneur who pioneered the concept of eliminating the middleman by purchasing products directly from the manufacturer and reselling them at his own price.

Every year on February 22, Woolworth’s Day is celebrated in honour of Woolworth’s “Five Cent Store.” In the beginning of his business, Frank Woolworth sold everything for five cents, which, at the time, set the standard. Even though the original Woolworth is no longer in existence, the Woolworth brand continues to expand internationally under the same name. In recognition of Woolworth’s pioneers, we celebrate this great store that has left its mark on history.

The background of Woolworth’s Day

Frank W. Woolworth, the company’s founder, was born in the United States in 1852. He was an entrepreneur who pioneered the concept of eliminating the middleman by purchasing products directly from the manufacturer and reselling them at his own price. In 1879, he opened a Woolworth’s Grand Five Cents Store in New York at the age of 27. The primary reason for the failure of the business was the high cost of living in New York City.

Frank continued his search for a new location to open the same store, and he eventually found one. In Pennsylvania, he opened a new store that proved to be successful. With this success, he convinced his brother to open a new store in the state under the name “Five Cents Woolworth’s Bro’s Store.” The store initially failed, but under the management of Sum, it gradually improved, allowing Sum to purchase the business. This acquisition gave the retail chain its first franchise under Sum. The expansion of the five-cent store chain continued while Woolworth’s name was used in some formats. At the turn of the twentieth century, there were six store chains operating in the United States and Canada. Frank planned to construct the Woolworth Building in New York in 1910 as a result of the chain’s astronomical profits. The store continued to sell items at the original price of five and ten cents until 1932, but this practise was discontinued in 1935.

The stores continued to operate and expand until 1997, when the company decided to cease operations and pursue new opportunities under the name Foot Locker Inc. Despite having no connection to the original Frank W. Woolworths chain, the Woolworth brand name persists in Australia, Europe, and South Africa.
