Neolithic architecture, which flourished between 10,000 and 2,000 B.C., is the first epoch of architectural distinction. The structures of this period were typically rectangular, and houses were constructed separately from one another. Stone, tree trunks, reeds, clay, and stout wooden posts were used to construct Neolithic structures. This architectural style was prevalent in south and southwest Asia and the majority of Europe. Stonehenge is a famous structure from that time period.

The period of antiquity saw the construction of some of the world’s greatest and most revered structures. The Ziggurat of Ur, a Mesopotamian structure devoted to the deity Marduk, is the era’s first significant structure. The Pyramid of Djoser was constructed during the Third Dynasty, and the Giza pyramids were constructed during the Fourth Dynasty.

Ancient Greek and then Roman architecture dominated architectural forms for centuries during the classical period. Ancient Greek architecture was created for the purpose of fostering a prosperous society. The Parthenon and Erechtheion are examples of Greek architecture. Roman architecture was the most sophisticated of its period, and its influence extended as far as North Africa. Ancient Romans were also known for innovations such as domes, baths, aqueducts, and rounded stone arches. The Pantheon and the Colosseum are the most significant Roman architectural structures still extant.

The subsequent Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Neo-Gothic architecture produced notable structures such as Durham Cathedral, Lund Cathedral, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Notre Dame de Paris, Reims Cathedral, and Florence Cathedral.
Art Nouveau architecture ushered in the Modern architecture era at the turn of the 20th century. It included Art Deco (Empire State Building and Chrysler Building), Expressionism (Einstein Tower and Lotus Temple), and Internationalism (Seagram Building and Equitable Building).

Postmodernism is an architectural style that is rapidly acquiring popularity in the twenty-first century, with examples including the Team Disney Building and the Dancing House. It is anticipated that 3D printing and sustainable architecture will dominate the architectural landscape for the foreseeable future.

World Architect Day was established in 1985 by the International Union of Architects to “remind the world of its responsibility for the future of the human habitat.” The day coincides flawlessly with World Habitat Day.
