The Slovenian Beekeepers' Association initiated a campaign in 2014 to designate May 20 as World Bee Day in an effort to protect bees and other pollinators.
The 20th of May is observed globally as World Bee Day. This day is dedicated to educating the general public about the significance of bees and beekeeping. There is an emphasis on the pollinator function of bees and their contribution to forest regeneration. World Bee Day teaches us how to protect bees and other pollinators because the bee population is threatened. The Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association established World Bee Day, which is now observed by environmentalists worldwide.
The Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association initiated a campaign in 2014 to designate May 20 as World Bee Day in an effort to protect bees and other pollinators. The Slovenian Government supported the initiative. Apimondia, the largest international beekeepers’ organisation, adopted the initiative in 2015.
The Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Food travelled the globe with a Bee World pavilion to actively promote the initiatives. The ministry also organised meetings with representatives of other nations and international organisations involved in environmental initiatives. In 2017, the Economic and Financial Committee of the United Nations adopted a resolution proclaiming World Bee Day. The resolution was approved unequivocally by the United Nations General Assembly, and May 20 was declared World Bee Day. The United States, Canada, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, and all E.U. member states were among the 115 countries that signed on as significant sponsors.
As one of the most significant pollinators, bees contribute to food security, sustainable agriculture, and biodiversity. Additionally, bees contribute significantly to climate change mitigation and environmental preservation. It is crucial to protect bees and the beekeeping industry in order to combat destitution and hunger, not to mention the impact on environmental health and biodiversity. Without bees, it may be impossible to resolve the pervasive problems of hunger and poverty. These small organisms are essential for our survival. Studies have demonstrated that bees are becoming increasingly imperilled. On World Bee Day, environmentalists and concerned citizens are encouraged to help protect pollinators and their habitats.
