World Cities Day 2023: Annually, World Cities Day is observed on October 31. By promoting global cooperation in sustainable urban development, the day seeks to increase public consciousness regarding global urbanization. World Cities Day corresponds with Sustainable Development Goal 11 of the United Nations, Sustainable Cities and Communities, which addresses the sustainable development of urban areas. The United Nations proclaimed 2013 World Cities Day, which has been observed annually ever since. The occasion raises awareness about the disparities that exist in the world’s largest cities and advocates for increased social integration, encompassing fairness and equal access to opportunities and services.

The background of World Cities Day

Around 7500 B.C., the first communities appeared in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in a region known as Mesopotamia. Included in these cities were Ur, Eridu, and Uruk. Rapidly, urban areas emerged along the banks of the Huang He River in China, the Nile River in Egypt, and the Indus River in India. In regions with fertile soil, early Homo sapiens were able to forsake their nomadic way of life and establish cities. Over the subsequent millennia, cities throughout the globe continued to rise and fall. The Indus Valley became desolate, Mesopotamia degenerated into rubble, and Rome ascended and fell. The city’s institution, however, persisted.

Throughout history, urban areas have served as hubs for commerce, culture, religion, and learning. Nevertheless, the growth and magnitude of contemporary urban areas were not feasible until the advent of the Industrial Revolution. The industrial revolution compelled individuals to migrate to urban areas in pursuit of employment prospects in manufacturing facilities. Technological progress has additionally facilitated urban population expansion; examples of such advancements include the development of steel, electricity conduction, elevators, and more. Presently, more than half of the global population resides in urban areas; therefore, educating this demographic on how to coexist in cities sustainably is more crucial than ever.

By 2030, the United Nations projects that there will be forty-one megacities, or cities with populations exceeding ten million. India, which currently has five megacities, is projected to accommodate seven more; Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of the Congo, is another location where megacities are certain to emerge.
