World Day of Peace 2024: Every year on January 1st, the World Day of Peace is mostly observed as a Catholic feast day honoring Mary, the Mother of God, and advocating for world peace. Popes typically issue edicts regarding the Catholic Social Teachings (C.S.T.) on this occasion. Developing a culture of care has always been the feast’s central topic. The Pope and the Vatican Church place a strong emphasis on the need for people to be kind to one another, tolerate one another, and build a community that upholds moral principles and resists the urge to ignore others. Every year, the World Day of Peace focuses on the advantages of living in a peaceful society.

The World Day of Peace’s History

Founder of the World Day of Peace, Pope Paul VI declared in 1967 that the world needed to be more aware of and focused on peace and understanding. Pope Francis recommended that the church take a more active role in global peace, so January 1 was designated as a holy day to honor them. The papal letters “Pacem in Terris” and “Populorum Progressio” served as inspiration for the Pope.

The Church and the Pope agreed in the letters “Pacem in Terris” and “Populorum Progressio” to concentrate on establishing order in four main areas to bring about peace: a person’s relationship with other people, a person’s relationship with a specific state, a state’s relationship with other states, and a state’s relationship with the international community.

It’s up to people, states, and finally the international arena to foster peace, tolerance, and understanding at all levels. Although the primary theme of World Day of Peace stays the same—creating a culture of care—the sub-themes change every year to reflect what’s going on.

The 2020 sub-theme, “Hope,” paid homage to the COVID-19 pandemic’s devastating effects on people throughout the world.
