World Day of Social Justice 2023: Date, Background, Facts

The world faces significant issues, such as severe financial crises, high unemployment rates, poverty, exclusion among societies, discrimination, and lack of access to facilities, which prevent developing countries from fully participating in the global economy.

The annual celebration of World Day for Social Justice occurs on February 20. Internationally, the world is plagued by problems that prevent millions of people from living a decent life. Due to no fault of their own, a significant portion of the global population lacks access to basic amenities such as housing, employment, healthcare, education, and nutrition, among others.

It must be the responsibility of the privileged to create a world in which social justice is the norm. If you want to make a significant contribution, you could enter the legal field.

The background of World Day of Social Justice

The world faces significant issues, such as severe financial crises, high unemployment rates, poverty, exclusion among societies, discrimination, and lack of access to facilities, which prevent developing countries from fully participating in the global economy. Copenhagen, Denmark hosted the World Social Development Summit in 1995. This led to the Copenhagen Declaration and Action Program. Over one hundred political leaders vowed to alleviate poverty, work towards full employment, and establish stable, secure, and just societies. They also determined that the focus of the development plans must be on people.

During a session of the Commission for Social Development in 2005 in New York, U.N. member states reviewed the Copenhagen Declaration and Program of Action. They committed to promoting social development. Two years later, on November 26, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared that beginning with its sixty-third session, February 20 will be annually observed as the World Day of Social Justice. The International Labour Organization adopted the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for Fair Globalization on June 10, 2008.

Organizations from around the globe, such as the United Nations and the International Labour Office, issue statements regarding the significance of social justice for individuals. Additionally, organisations create and present plans for addressing issues and advancing social justice. Unions also participate and do their part to commemorate this day. The official slogan of the Russian General Confederation of Trade Unions is “Social Justice and a Decent Life for All!”
